We are currently seeking a Research Associate to join our Barley team based at Rothwell. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of commercially successful barley varieties, primarily through effective malting quality testing and marker assisted breeding strategy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage and operate the malt analysis in the laboratory.

o Coordinate malting analysis and ensure good quality data.

o Develop and implement new protocols adapted to the breeding target.

o Collaborate with breeder and external relationship to identify new strategies. Keep up to date with scientific literature and market requirements.

o Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained and define future investment in the laboratory.

o Agree deadlines and set timetables with breeder.

o Produce data following IoB and EBC methods. 

o Assist breeder with marker assisted breeding strategy.

o Apply current marker assisted breeding strategy to the winter and spring programs.

o Optimise genomic calibrations through effective genotypic and phenotypic data. An intensive use of internal statistical tool (COBALT) will be required to analyse data.

o Participate to the implementation of new breeding strategies according to the market.

o In collaboration with MAS project leader, develop and improve markers.

• Support the barley team with all aspects of the breeding programmes including drilling, scoring, and harvesting during peak activities. Be an active member of the breeding team by making proposals and acting to continuously improve our processes and safety.

Requirements

 YOUR POFILE

o MS degree in Plant Breeding, Biochemistry, Genetics or similar discipline with at least 3 years of experience.

• YOUR EXPERTISE

o Experience in planning and scientific project management.

o Experience in laboratory will be an advantage for this position.

o Knowledge of computer programs and applications, such as Microsoft Office, data visualization tools and proficiency in programming languages (R).

YOUR SKILLS

o Strong analytical skills.

o Must be innovative and detail oriented.

o Good communication and interpersonal skills are required to foster teamwork and develop internal and external working relationships.

Due to the seasonal nature of the job, overtime working will be required in peak periods, and this could include weekend work.
